Sumkar District says Stop the Illegal Logging and return Our Land

Madang Landowners are calling on the National Government to be faithful to their word by cancelling all illegal SABL leases, stop all illegal logging AND return the land to its customary owners.

Over 5 million hectares of customary land in Papua New Guinea has been stolen from local people over a period of time. Using Special Agriculture and Business Leases (SABLs), foreign companies were unlawfully been given 99 year-rights to own the land mass.

Nautilus overcomes obstacle to seabed mining

Papua New Guinea's mining minister, Byron Chan, says an experimental seabed mining project could pump 300 million kina, or 124 million US dollars, into the country's economy.

The Canadian mining company, Nautilus Minerals, is set to begin mining the seabed off New Ireland in Papua New Guinea for metals, following a dispute resolution with the government there.

Panguna reopening not in the interest of the people

Contrary to authority’s claim of common support, the opposition against the Panguna Mine reopening is more apparent then ever. People in Panguna, especially the women folk, who have been subtly crying against the move, are now coming out strongly and using stringent measures to stop any attempt by ABG, PLA or BCL to reopen the mine.

Govt gives SABL title holders

THE title holders of the 29 revoked special agriculture and business leases (SABL) have 14 days to hand in their original title copies, says the secretary of the department of lands and physical planning.

Secretary Romilly Kila Pat said that the department was given directives by the national executive council (NEC) as per their decision 184/2014 approving to revoke all SABLs recommended by the Commission of Inquiry (COI).

Current political crisis has roots in imposed system of government

Sir John Guise warned Australia thirty years ago that a Westminster style of government was not suitable for Papua New Guinea and that instability would result if Australia went ahead and imposed its will on PNG.

In a remarkable television interview that can be watched below, Guise warned that having a strong centralized power as Canberra wanted and eventually imposed would lead to abuse, exactly as we are seeing now with the Prime Minister able to manipulate events to suit his own personal interests.

25 SABLS TO BE REVOKED

The Lands Department will be cancelling 25 SABLs as recommended by the Commission of Inquiry.

Secretary for the department Romily Kila Pat says notices will be placed in the two major papers come Monday.

At this stage, the department is currently updating addresses for cancellation. The Lands Department has comfortably moved into its’ new premises called ‘Eda Tano’ or ‘our land.’
