CHIEF Secretary Manasupe Zurenuoc said students rallying to protest the passing of the Judicial Conduct Bill last Friday were exercising their rights and praised them for their good conduct and behaviour during the event.
“You have the right to respond ... and I must thank (NCD police chief Andy) Bawa for being cooperative and allowing all you to march.”
Zurenuoc, who accepted a petition from the students on behalf of Prime Minister Peter O’Neill, told the students that they “had been professional in managing the issue”.
The five-page petition was handed over by the university’s student council vice president Dick Loa outside Morauta Haus.
“We owe the people of PNG to raise issues that concern them and UPNG has been doing this for many years.
“I must also commend the SRC president and his council members for researching the law. “The prime minister is unable to come because of the short notice.
“We will consider the petition in the best possible way and I can’t guarantee you a favourable response,” Zurenuoc said.
Bawa encouraged the students to be patient and give the government time to consider the petition.
