PAPUA New Guinea’s chief inspector of mines Mohan Singh has expressed satisfaction at the recently concluded conference of mining inspectors from the Pacific.
Chief inspectors of mines from all states and territories of Australia and New Zealand were in the country for the conference on Sept 13-19.
Before the start of actual proceedings at the Madang Resort in Madang, the delegates visited Lihir gold mine, Kurumbukari cobalt/nickel mine and Basamuk cobalt/nickel refinery.
Various mining companies such as Ok Tedi Mining Ltd, Porgera Joint Venture, Morobe Mining Joint Venture, Newcrest, Nautilus and Marengo also made presentations on their projects to the delegates.
The conference discussed critical issues relating to safety and health of mine employees.
The inspectors shared their ideas, experiences and thoughts amongst one another to further the cause of safety, health and regulation in the region.
“All jurisdictions in Australia and New Zealand agreed in principle to open their doors for us to have access to their resources and expertise,” Singh said.
He said for PNG to make optimal use of the timely opportunity, it needed to strategise its approach to tap into the huge reservoir that could involve regular liaison, exchange visits as well as adequate and appropriate resources and budget.
