Australia's High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea says the ultimate test for the new generation of leaders in PNG is translating resources-driven economic growth into real development.

In 2011, PNG had the seventh fastest growing country in the world and up to $US80 billion worth of new mining investment in the pipeline.

In a speech in Sydney, Ian Kemmish said translating that growth into real development will be the ultimate test of the new generation of political leaders.

"Public sector weaknesses and the extent to which corruption has infected this sector will be a real challenge in capitalising on this opportunity," he said.

"Political stability will also be very important.

"Bougainville will need to be managed wisely and perhaps above all else much more needs to be done to promote a stronger role for women in national decision-making.'

Mr Kemish said Australia is working with PNG's leaders to meet the challenges.
