“The youth are the hope of our future. They are the ones who will carry the torch of leadership and build the nation we dream of.” - Sir Michael Somare, Founding Father of Papua New Guinea.
As the celebrations of Papua New Guinea’s 50th Independence Jubilee fade into history, a new chapter is being written, not tomorrow, but today.
With over half of PNG’s population under 25, we are a nation bursting with youthful energy. Yet for decades, leadership has remained the domain of a political elite, detached from the realities of its people. That era is coming to an end.
The recent election of a young leader from LaiagamPogera is not just a win for one constituency; it is a powerful statement. Youth can no longer be labeled as “leaders of tomorrow.” They are the leaders of today. They cannot be parked, delayed, or dismissed.
This generational shift demands more than applause; it demands intentional change. Senior politicians must shift from clinging to power toward mentorship, empowerment, and inclusion. For 50 years, PNG has lacked a succession plan. We must not repeat that mistake.
We need a political culture that embraces innovation, bold thinking, and fearless youth. The legacy of our founding fathers must be a springboard, not a stronghold.
“A man may die, nations may rise and fall, but an idea lives on.” — John F. Kennedy
The idea of a vibrant, youth led Papua New Guinea is no longer a dream. It is in motion. Our duty is to nurture it, equip it, and believe in it.
A new generation has arrived. The future is no longer ahead; it is here.
