Local people living around the site for the proposed Pacific Marine Industrial Zone north of Madang town, have taken out a newspaper advertisement opposing the project.
The PMIZ will be the first Special Economic Zone in PNG, under new laws being drafted by the World Bank.
The PNG government has plans to establish up to ten tuna canneries within the PMIZ and has secured a loan of US$71 million from the Chinese Exim bank to fund the first stage of the project.
The landowners advertisement has been authorized by 35 leaders from 15 different communities, clans and associations.
If you would like to send an email to the World Bank in protest at their role in fostering SEZs and supporting the PMIZ please visit ACT NOW!'s ACTION ALERT.
