ICAC to start functioning by end of 2015

The Independent Commission Against Corruption will be in place physically by the end of next year.

Government Chief Secretary Sir Manasupe Zurenuoc (pictured) says for now “we are only over the first hurdle where the constitutional amendments were introduced, and by next month it will go before parliament for its final reading and second vote”.

Zurenuoc says after this, amendment will be done to the organic law for the purposes of outlining duties and functions of the ICAC.

“This process is lengthy and needs time. It has to be done properly in accordance to our laws,” he says. “But the actual setting up of the office and appointments of persons to run the organization should be done by late 2015.”

The ICAC is a government initiative to combat corruption at all levels, however, it will not take over the role of the Ombudsmen Commission or the Task Force Sweep Team.
