PNG landowners want seabed mining stopped

Landowners in Papua New Guinea have petitioned the government to halt a controversial seabed mining project along the nation’s coast.

Mining Minister Byron Chan on Tuesday was handed a petition with 24,000 signatures from residents of Madang, Oro and New Britain provinces who say they do not want Canadian-owned Nautilus Minerals’ Solwara 1 project in PNG’s Bismarck Sea to go ahead.

The project is the first of its kind in the world and will see minerals – mostly copper and gold – extracted from the ocean floor.

PUBLIC NOTICE: 

Act Now would like to announce the Presentation of the Experimental Seabed Mining Petition at The Holiday Inn (Ballroom 2) on Monday 22nd October. 
The petition will be presented by representatives from significant communities of New Ireland, East New Britain, Milne Bay and Madang. Various civil society organizations, students and other concerned Papua New Guineans will also be present to witness this presentation. An invitation has been extended to the Honorable Minister for Mining Byron Chan.

Alternate Realities of ESM

Alternate realities. Two or more possible realities. Well that’s the way I choose to interpret it. The stuff that science fiction movies are made of. In this case we are talking about science (and a touch of economics) but these realities are a far cry from fiction.

So let’s begin. This reality has that Mista Prime Minista O’Neill and his cabinet have decided that PNG will not wait for further research because the Environmental Impact Assessment carried out by Coffey Natural Systems for Nautilus Inc is relevant and thorough.
