Papua New Guinea is not a poor country. We have vast natural resources and are an able and hardworking people. We should be able to provide everyone with access to good health and education services and good roads.

But vast sums of money are being stolen every year by people who abuse their positions of trust - whether in government, the public services or private companies. This is money that should be spent on health services, schools and roads.

Finance Department Commission of Inquiry

A Commission of Inquiry into the Department of Finance was conducted from 2006 until 2009 following widespread reports of corruption and mismanagement. The Commission report was presented in Parliament on March 5, 2010.

The Commission report details how the Finance Department paid out hundreds of millions of dollars in sham compensation claims.

The Commission recommended more than 50 people including lawyers, senior bureaucrats and businessmen be referred for criminal prosecution.

PNG Government rushing new mines without fully knowing the costs and benefits

The government is rushing major new mines without properly understanding the costs and benefits of an export led economy or the possible alternatives.

Community advocacy group ACT NOW! wants the PNG government to commission a proper study of the full costs and benefits of existing mines and other natural resource industries before committing to continue along the same development path.

Community advocacy group, ACT NOW! says the announcement by new Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, that his government will sell the controversial Falcon jet is a smart move.

ACT NOW! calls on Minister to take action on Deloitte claims

Community based campaign group, ACT NOW!, is calling on Minister for the Environment Benny Allen to investigate claims of serious financial mismanagement and misuse of trust funds in his Department.

Four reports from international consultancy firm Deloitte have been published on the internet that are highly critical of financial management within the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC).

Ninety-nine percent say PM not doing enough on corruption

PORT MORESBY: Ninety-nine percent of people who voted in an on-line poll think the government is not doing enough to tackle corruption.

The poll was conducted by the public interest group ACT NOW!

Effrey Dademo, Program Manager, says, “the message to the Prime Minister and the government is clear. The people want to see much more action on corruption. That has to include prosecuting white collar criminals in the public service and those they conspire with”.
