Over fifty thousand square kilometers of land has been stolen from indigenous communities in a huge unlawful land grab.
This is both a human rights and an environmental disaster as hundreds of communities rely on the stolen land for their subsistence and incomes, and thousands of hectatres of tropical forest are being cleared by logging and oil plam companies.
A Commission of Inquiry reported in 2013 and recommended the unlawfully issued leases be cancelled.
Since then, the Prime Minister Peter O'Neill has made repeated public promises the leases will be cancelled and the land returned to its customary owners.
But the Minister for Lands and his Department, which issued the unlawful leases in the first place, is blocking the cancellations and finding new ways to keep the land in foreign hands.
The Prime Minister has publicly outed the Lands Department for its failure, but crucially has not taken any action against the Minister or his officials.
Please send an email to the Prime Minister telling him it is his responsibilty to ensure his Ministers act as instructed and the leases are cancelled as he has repeatedly promised.
