Attorney General, Arnold Amet's apology for his racist attack at the PMIZ forum directed at MP Ken Fairweather, which was captured on video, has not stemmed the public criticism of his remarks as these two letters from Friday's newspapers show:
Arnie apology too late for world opinion
Teik Soba
OUR Attorney General and Regional Member for Madang and former Chief Justice of Papua New Guinea Sir Arnold Amet’s apology is too late to make any change at all to the World’s general perception of who he is and the country– irreversible damage done!
Looking at his background, is he not one of the few privileged individuals who attended school in Australia – his schooling was financed by white community, he attended school among white children and most probably accommodated by white family for the duration of his schooling?
Racism or being racist is hatred for fellow human being because of colour of skin, or from a different country or because of one’s religion or belief. It is one of the worst forms of crime any individual or a group can do to another fellow human being. Racism is an ancient age old evil deed and practice that has caused immeasurable damage to the lives of scores of human beings. Nazi’s killing of millions of Jews, removing of Africans and Pacific Islanders from the comfort of their homeland as slaves are a few examples as a reminder.
To show a colour of racist in this day and age is unacceptable under any circumstance is unbecoming of an elected political leader. Sir Arnold’s questionable deed borders on principles and ethics required of leaders.
To ask for forgiveness is a typical religious joke exploiting the generosity of Christ, forgiving and understanding citizens of PNG for a calculated well intentioned mistake. Too bad, it is an unforgivable mistake made by a learned lawyer and a devout Christian and therefore, he ought to resign to show he truly is genuinely sincere about the forgiveness he is seeking.
Disappointed in Sir Arnold Amet
I am very disappointed in Sir Arnold Amet. His comments about plantation land is hypocritical. Our Government is signing away huge portions of land to logging companies who provide no long term benefits and destroy our environment.
In some places, the few working plantations that are left are the only source of services for the people. There are areas that have no functioning government clinics and the only place to get treatment is at the plantations.
There are also lots of rundown plantations around the country that are just sitting. Dept of Lands does not make any attempts to get these plantations into the hands of the traditional landowners or into the hands of someone who would provide some benefits to the traditional landowners. Is this just a way to draw attention away from the Government’s failures or is this a racially motivated statement.
Please Sir Arnold let us the voters know.
