Word on the streets of Madang is that the RD Tuna Cannery in the province made a 2 Million Kina loss on exported frozen loins last year. Why that is so is unknown, but the impact caused the recruitment of more women very poorly paid as usual, doing a lot of standing, and unnecessary deductions made to their already low pay packages.

Conference reaffirms Pacific Identity

People gathered at the Divine Word University in Madang last week to discuss the importance of restoring Pacific identity.

The gathering coincided with a celebration dance, that signified a protest against western influence of exploiting land and sea resources in the Pacific. .

In attendance were artists, musicians, chiefs, academics, clergy, activists, youth and civil society representatives.

Miner: No environment incident happened

STAKEHOLDERS in the Ramu nickel/cobalt project have been assured that no significant environment incident has happened during the project’s commissioning period.

The Ramu NiCo management said it was closely implementing the operational environment management plan as required under the government plan.

The firm has engaged an independent consultant from Australia to conduct studies on marine life.

LO company gets contract

Kurumbukari mine landowners were awarded two road maintenance and a casual employment contract by Ramu NiCo on Monday.

Ramu NiCo’s president Wang Jicheng said the company would continue to deliver project memorandum of agreement (MOA) commitments and other business and employment opportunities entitled to by landowners despite the recent devastating attack on KBK mine which cost the company around US$5.06 million (K14m).

KBK Landowners apologize to Ramu Nico for Riots

Kurumbukari landowners in the Bundi district of Madang have apologized to Ramu NiCo Management for the mob attack on KBK Mine last Monday.

Today, chairman of KBK Landowners Association, Mathew Denguo, said the attack was done by a minority group and does not represent all the landowners.

Mr Denguo said the act was criminal in nature and uncivilised, bringing shame to the landowners and disruption to the project.

Police make arrests over mine raid

POLICE have arrested five men in connection with the raid and destruction of properties last week at the Ramu Nickel’s Kurumbukari mine site in Madang.

A Madang police source said the five were understood to be the main instigators of the raid last Monday.

The source said two of the people arrested were employed in the company’s community affairs department, two from a security firm plus a senior employee.
