UN committee demands answers on SABL land grab

The United Nations has written to the government demanding answers over the lack of action on the SABL land grab.

In a letter, dated February 17, the Committee for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination says it is concerned that no concrete action has been taken to cancel the SABL leases and logging operations continue.

The Committee asks the government to provide an explanation of measures taken to ensure customary land is not being alienated and any leases have the prior informed consent of local people. The Committee also demands answers on the steps taken by government to ensure people have access to justice and an effective remedy where their rights are violated.

The Committee also references the lack of government action on the findings of the SABL Commission of Inquiry finding and  requests information on the steps taken to protect landowners who protest against the SABL from any kind of intimidation, harassment, attack or physical harm.

The Committee notes the PNG government has totally failed to respond to an earlier, 2011, letter raising the same concerns.

The Committee letter comes after ACT NOW! wrote to the Office of the High Commission to update the committee on the latest developments with the SABL land grab and the lack of government action.
