Newspaper Poll shows overwhelming opposition to experimental seabed mining

An overwhelming 80% of respondents to a newspaper poll oppose the proposed Solwara 1 experimental seabed mine.

The poll was run by The National newspaper and asked is the Solwara 1 mining project good for the country?

Community activist group ACT NOW! says the poll result reflects the widespread community opposition to the proposed mining by Canadian company, Nautilus Minerals.

"PNG does not want or need this experimental mine" says ACT NOW! Program Manager, Effrey Dademo.

"The potential environmental impacts, the small economic returns and the inability of our government regulators to properly supervise land based mining all mean the Solwara 1 project is ill conceived and unnecessary".

Mining Minister Byron Chan has still to respond to a community petition with 24,000 signatures opposing experimental seabed mining. The petition was presented to the Minister in October 2012.
