Nautilus Minerals, the developer of the Solwara 1 Project is currently developing a Environment Management Plan and monitoring programmes for the project.

According to Nautilus, this is a contingency plan to put to action just in case an unexpected incident occurs during the operation of the project that would require emergency response.

Nautilus claims deal done with Govt

Chairman Geoffrey Louden announced this at the Annual General Meeting in Toronto, Ontario last week.

Tug of War over Seabed Mining

THE East New Britain provincial government has maintained that it must get 60 per cent of the equity shares of 5 per cent offloaded by the National Government in the Solwara 1 project.

This stance was reaffirmed during the Provincial Executive Council (PEC) meeting last week where Mineral Resources Authority (MRA) was invited to do a presentation on the equity shares between East New Britain and New Ireland provinces.

Chan rallies support for Lihir MOA despite controversies

Mining Minister and member for Namatanai, Byron Chan is summoning all the support he can get to fully revitalise the Lihir Memorandum of Agreement (MOA).

The full revitalisation of the Lihir MOA is believed willl pave the way for Canada-based Nautilus Minerals to pursue their development agenda on the highly controversial Solwara 1 project off the coast of Namatanai as well as pending issues on Lihir and Simberi gold mines.

Nautilus Minerals Inc. announces that the Independent State of Papua New Guinea's nominee for participation in the Company's Solwara 1 Project has today placed US$113,000,000 into escrow, representing the balance of the funding for the State nominee's 15% share of the capital required to complete the development phase of the Project up to first production.

Juffa queries deep sea mining

THE GOVERNMENT must conduct a scientific study to determine the imminent danger that the deep sea mining will have on the marine life, says Oro Governor Gary Juffa.

Mr Juffa said this when directing questions in Parliament yesterday to the Minister for Fisheries after being told that the government has imposes a ban on harvest of beche de mer in compliance with recommendation from a scientific study.

Prominent private lawyer calls for law to govern sea mine

THERE must be a specific legislation governing the recent approval by the Government for the world’s first offshore mining project in the country, a senior lawyer has said.

Camillus Narokobi who has written a thesis on the Bismarck Archipelago seas while doing his Masters degree on the studies on law of the sea, said PNG doesn’t have any legislation governing the mining of our seabed.
