Policemen warned against wife bashing

Highlands Divisional Police Commander Simon Kauba has issued a warning to his men that anybody who bashes his wife will be automatically suspended.

The ACP made the stern call during a luncheon with his senior officers and it follows a similar statement of zero tolerance from the Police Commissioner in Port Moresby.

Police frustration directed at the wrong target

The United Nations has reported that Papua New Guinea police systematically beat detainees, cripple those suspected of serious crimes and sexually assault female prisoners. These were the conclusions from a two week tour of the country by the UN's special rapporteur on torture, Manfred Nowak, who said police often brutally beat detainees with car fan belts, gun butts, iron rods and stones.

Police barracks condemned but who is to blame?

One hundred police and their families have been left homeless in Lae after health authorities declared the Bumbu police barracks unfit for human habitation.

In an inspection carried out on Tuesday it was found the houses were infested with termites, there was a serious sewerage overflow and no power or water supplies. 

It is reported that the houses have received no major maintenance since they were constructed in the 1960's and two homes recently collapsed on top of sleeping families.
