Villagers not seeing promised benefits from Ramu mine

Usino/Bundi MP Anthony Yagama and Madang acting Provincial Police Commander Ben Neneo met with the Bundi people on Sunday to hear their side of the story of the million kina damages caused by some of them last week.

Bundi villagers expressed their concerns that the developer, Ramu Nickel, and the Government of PNG had not implemented much of what had been agreed upon in the MOA.

KBK Landowners apologize to Ramu Nico for Riots

Kurumbukari landowners in the Bundi district of Madang have apologized to Ramu NiCo Management for the mob attack on KBK Mine last Monday.

Today, chairman of KBK Landowners Association, Mathew Denguo, said the attack was done by a minority group and does not represent all the landowners.

Mr Denguo said the act was criminal in nature and uncivilised, bringing shame to the landowners and disruption to the project.

New Caledonia probes Vale incident

Reports from New Caledonia say an investigation has been opened after an incident at the Vale nickel plant.

The local newspaper says a device measuring the density of ore pulp was damaged in what the miner says amounted to a technical incident.

There was concern that a radioactive substances could have affected staff and the environment but a internal assessment found no risk.

It is not known what caused the glitch.

Police make arrests over mine raid

POLICE have arrested five men in connection with the raid and destruction of properties last week at the Ramu Nickel’s Kurumbukari mine site in Madang.

A Madang police source said the five were understood to be the main instigators of the raid last Monday.

The source said two of the people arrested were employed in the company’s community affairs department, two from a security firm plus a senior employee.
