Vanuatu calls for UN probe of alleged rights abuses in Indonesia’s Papua provinces

Vanuatu has called on the United Nations to appoint a Special Representative to investigate alleged human rights abuses in the Papuan provinces of Indonesia and their political status, with its Prime minister declaring that the West Papuans have been consistently denied any sort of recognition by the world body.

Public forum in PNG’s capital for West Papuan MSG membership

Today in Papua New Guinea’s capital, the Melanesian Unified Front for West Papuan Self-Determination, or WUF, is to host a public forum on the West Papuan bid for membership in the Melanesian Spearhead Group.

The forum, at the Port Moresby campus of the University of PNG, is jointly arranged by the University’s West Papuan Students Association.

Meeting Planned to Discuss Graft Fugitive

OFFICIALS from Indonesia and Papua New Guinea hope to schedule a meeting in which the return of graft fugitive Djoko Tjandra will be the topic for discussion.
Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa confirmed the Indonesian government’s interest in such a meeting while discussing a letter sent by PNG.

New video shows plight of Indonesian refugees in Papua New Guinea

For nearly 50 years the people of West Papua have suffered under brutal Indonesian colonial rule and up to 400,000 civilians have lost their lives in Indonesian military operations.

Thousands have fled across the border to seek sanctuary in Papua New Guinea.

The footage below was taken on Wednesday 16th February 2011, in the jungle near Vanimo, Sandaun Province, Papua New Guinea - less than 50km from the West Papua border.

Video sheds light on Indonesian security forces abuses in Papua

The jumpy video shows a prisoner lying in a jungle clearing in eastern Indonesia moments after troops allegedly sliced open his abdomen with a bayonet, sending intestines tumbling from his stomach.

Using the little life he has left in him, Yawen Wayeni lifts his arm into the air, and says weakly, "Freedom! Papua ... Freedom!"
