Two SABL Leases declared null and void in PNG

The National Court in Papua New Guinea has declared two special agriculture and business leases covering 38 thousand hectares of land in Oro Province null and void, ordering the state to cancel the title deeds.

The land is in part of the customary territory of nine indigenous tribes, who argued that they rely on it as the basis for their economy and subsistence livelihoods.

Landowners get leases cancelled

THE Northern government and the landowners of the Collingwood Bay area have cancelled two Special Agriculture Business Leases (SABL) through the National Court in Waigani.

Governor Gary Juffa announced that at a media conference in Port Moresby yesterday.

He did not elaborate on the court’s ruling but said Northern was the first province to be successful through the court of law in the cancellation of its SABLs.

Juffa queries deep sea mining

THE GOVERNMENT must conduct a scientific study to determine the imminent danger that the deep sea mining will have on the marine life, says Oro Governor Gary Juffa.

Mr Juffa said this when directing questions in Parliament yesterday to the Minister for Fisheries after being told that the government has imposes a ban on harvest of beche de mer in compliance with recommendation from a scientific study.

Northern Governor, Gary Juffa, has raised concerns over Nautilus Seabed Mining Project, which he dubbed illegal.

Governor Juffa said Deep Sea Mining has been banned in Australia and in Namibia, and already 20, 000 people in PNG have petitioned Mining Minister, Byron Chan, in October last year. Mr Chan said to respond in two weeks, but it has taken him one whole year.

NORTHERN Governor Garry Juffa has warned companies and individuals planning to develop natural resources in the province to seek permission from the provincial government first.

He sounded the warning after he was alerted on Tuesday that an overseas company had claimed in a foreign newspaper advertisement that it had secured 100,000 hectares of land in Northern.

PNG governor says independence vital for anti graft body

The Governor of Papua New Guinea's Oro Province, Gary Juffa, says the country's new anti-graft commission must be truly independent if it is to work.

The Peter O'Neill-led government has passed legislation to create an Independent Commission Against Corruption.

This comes as the Pomio MP Paul Tiensten was jailed for nine years hard labour this month over the misuse of three point eight million US dollars in public funds.
