Bank plan just another land grab warns ACT NOW!

Commercial banks want the government to change the law to make it easier for land leases to be used as collateral for loans, but their plans are ill-timed as the wider problem of corruption in the Department of Lands remains unresolved and this latest plan could mean the legality of fraudulent leases like the Special Agriculture and Business Leases titles could not be challenged.

The banks have issued a report calling for the authenticity of titles issued by the Department of Lands to be protected so the leases can become bankable.

PNG governor says independence vital for anti graft body

The Governor of Papua New Guinea's Oro Province, Gary Juffa, says the country's new anti-graft commission must be truly independent if it is to work.

The Peter O'Neill-led government has passed legislation to create an Independent Commission Against Corruption.

This comes as the Pomio MP Paul Tiensten was jailed for nine years hard labour this month over the misuse of three point eight million US dollars in public funds.

Concerns over Govt's proposed cyber crime policy

A Papua New Guinea writer and blogger says a proposed cyber crime policy could go too far in policing activity on social media, and could be a move by the government to control social media.

Martyn Namorong, the author of the prominent blog, the Namorong report, says that while he supports the introduction of measures to control cyber crime like spam, hacking, and fraud, the reach into social media is concerning.

New SABL advert on three radio stations

A new 30-second radio advert is being broadcast in Papua New Guinea this week as part of the campaign against the SABL land grab.

The advert calls on Prime Minister Peter O'Neill to implement the Commission of Inquiry recommendastions and revoke the unlawful SABL leases and stop the illegal logging. 

The advert is being broadcast on the popular Nau FM and Yumi FM stations and also on Legends FM.

Anti-graft bill through

Parlt passes ICAC Bill with 91-0 vote

PARLIAMENT has passed the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) Bill with an overwhelming 91-0 votes.

Prime Minister Peter O’Neill, who introduced the Bill, said that was the first hurdle towards realising the establishment of an anti-corruption body.

ICAC to start functioning by end of 2015

The Independent Commission Against Corruption will be in place physically by the end of next year.

Government Chief Secretary Sir Manasupe Zurenuoc (pictured) says for now “we are only over the first hurdle where the constitutional amendments were introduced, and by next month it will go before parliament for its final reading and second vote”.
