K780 million stolen : Locals fix road with spades, picks

There is cry almost in every province in PNG for infrastructure to reach thier village/towns etc. For some the wait has lasted for more than 20 years. The maintanance of road links to towns is a big cry as this is the most efficient mode of transport for many rural residents to access health-care, markets and other government services. Even with the rife of corruption, theft of tax payers money and missappropriation, locals have still dug deep to fix roads with spades and picks in Chimbu http://www.thenational.com.pg/?q=node/91260.

Ward Councillor, Tax Teimai Kibu said that he heard on many occassions that funds were being allocated by the Government for the district for the upgrading of the road but he did not know where the money went. And this is common. We have heard of the K780 million that was stolen in the Department of Finance as published in the 2010 Report of the Commission of Inquiry, but to this date nothing is being done to recover the money as quick as it disappeared, five years on!

Our government has the responsibility to answer to its people who are tierd of waiting, who have proved that they will work to bring services closer to them, because the need is tremndous. It is time to serve our people....Implement the Commission recomendations, prosecute the individuals implicated and recover the money!
