The RD tuna cannery in Madang is a Filipino owned operation that has provoked considerable controversy over working conditions, hygiene standards, environmental pollution and negative social impacts on local communities.

The South Seas Tuna loining plant in Wewak is a Tawanese-owned business that skins and bones tuna for export to overseas canneries.

In 2005 a major Social Impact study exposed the project's history of political corruption that involves the family of current Prime Minister, Michael Somare, and the environmental damage and the negative social impacts of the project.
