MP Dame Kidu joins ACT NOW! to protest about violence against women and children

Papua New Guinea's only female Member of Parliament, who was until recently Minister for Community Development, has joined ACT NOW!'s campaign on violence against women and children.

Dame Carol Kidu has thanked and congratulated ACT NOW! members for taking action and urged civil society not to give up the fight against domestic violence.

Kidu has joined the email action on the ACT NOW! website which targets Police Commissioner Tom Kulunga and calls on him to take action in the high profile case of Joy Wartovo.

Dame Kidu has also related her own frustration at trying to get the legal system work for one of her own staff members:

"I have attempted to make the system work for a staff member - with IPOs, reports, personally calling police etc but her case came to nothing in the end and she was frustrated and powerless in spite of the systems put in place by Magistrates etc. She has since faced further beatings (including a broken jaw which had to be wired for several months).

"Laws do exist but they are still not working for victims of violence.

"Civil society must not give up".
