Land issues cause SABL cancellations

The reason behind the dispute during the special agriculture business lease (SABL) site in Pomio district has been attributed to land ownership issues.

Norbert Pames from Portion 196C (Pomata Investments Limited) in the Sigite/Mukus integrated project area in West Pomio indicated this when commending the national Government on its decision to cancel SABL projects.

Landowners from the areas of Pomata and Ralopal in East New Britain Province expressed their concerns in a peaceful protest last week.

Last week 400 landowners from Pomio gathered to protest against the delay by the Prime Minister in implementing the recommendations of the SABL Commission of Inquiry Report.

The landowners marched to the District Chamber with banners and placards highlighting the controversial land grabbing that is on going in their area.

The landowners were blocked by the police from staging a peaceful protest at the Drina logging camp.

The SABLs Fight is Far From Over

Landowners are committed to fight against the Pomio SABLs despite a court ruling yesterday. Pomio landowners are disappointed at yesterday's Supreme Court ruling that upheld the appeal by Memalo Holdings, the landowner company holding the two disputed  SABLs in West Pomio, but have resolved to continue their fight.

The full bench of the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Memalo Holdngs in their appeal against the Judicial Review by landowners opposing the SABLs, due to the delay in making the Court application.
