Recent lease cancellations in PNG prompts call for action on SABLs

Activists in Papua New Guinea say the cancellation of two leases in Port Moresby highlights the government's inaction in scrapping other controversial leases covering millions of hectares of customary land.

Last week the Secretary of the Lands Department cancelled two leases over Ela Beach after the local MP publicly alleged they'd been obtained corruptly - a claim disputed by the lease holder.

Special agriculture lease still a thorny issue

 'Passing the buck' like everyone else again. fact remains that the PNG Forest Authority is the government body mandated to issue all FCA's and not the Lands Department. Thus, the PNGFA should see it as thier responsibility to cancel any FCA's that have been issued to illegal SABL(s).

SABL(s) have been deemed illegal but why is it that logging is continuing? Is it becuase the FCA's are still valid?

Govt gives SABL title holders

THE title holders of the 29 revoked special agriculture and business leases (SABL) have 14 days to hand in their original title copies, says the secretary of the department of lands and physical planning.

Secretary Romilly Kila Pat said that the department was given directives by the national executive council (NEC) as per their decision 184/2014 approving to revoke all SABLs recommended by the Commission of Inquiry (COI).

25 SABLS TO BE REVOKED

The Lands Department will be cancelling 25 SABLs as recommended by the Commission of Inquiry.

Secretary for the department Romily Kila Pat says notices will be placed in the two major papers come Monday.

At this stage, the department is currently updating addresses for cancellation. The Lands Department has comfortably moved into its’ new premises called ‘Eda Tano’ or ‘our land.’

NGO wants action on illegal PNG land leases

An NGO in Papua New Guinea says the Prime Minister's announcement that controversial land leases will be scrapped needs to be followed up with action.

Peter O'Neill has announced that Special Agriculture and Business Leases obtained illegally will be cancelled and provisions in the Land Act which allowed for SABLs to be granted, abolished.

He's acting on the recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry into the SABLs which was presented to the government nearly a year ago.

77 SABL LICENSES REVOKED

Prime Minister Peter O’Neill says his government is serious in implementing recommendations made from the Commission of Inquiry.

His comments come after cabinet acted on the recommendations of the Special Agriculture Business Lease inquiry, cancelling more than 70 of the licenses.

It also comes at a time when his Commission of Inquiry into the Paraka saga almost got him arrested.
