Prior to 1995, Papua New Guinea's roads were constructed and maintained by the Department of Works. In 1995, structural and legislative adjustments shifted the role of the Works Department from maintenance and construction to monitoring and supervision.

A New Solution to Building Road and other Infrastructure in Papua New Guinea by NASFUND

With the growth of Papua New Guineas economy, we have seen an almost equal a reversal in the maintenance of all our major highways and roads. From the Highlands Highway to the Madang Highway and other major roads - pot holes, washed out bridges and roads in total disrepair are sadly all to common in this ludicrously resource rich democracy.

One hundred police and their families have been left homeless in Lae after health authorities declared the Bumbu police barracks unfit for human habitation.

In an inspection carried out on Tuesday it was found the houses were infested with termites, there was a serious sewerage overflow and no power or water supplies. 

It is reported that the houses have received no major maintenance since they were constructed in the 1960's and two homes recently collapsed on top of sleeping families.
