Mandi Tumarau Road Development

Mandi to Tumarau road in Turubu local level government area in East Sepik Province is currently given a facelift of K1.9 million.

Thanks to Minister for Correctional Services and Member for Wewak Open Jim B Simatab with counter funding from provincial and the national government to see this vital service reaching the people.

The road which connects more than 5,000 people was built in the early 1980s and has never been upgraded or maintained ever since.

Jimmy is from the Junk-Aral District of the Jiwaka Province, and he walks from Jiwaka out to the Madang Province to sell his bags of coffee beans and peanuts once or twice every month. From where Jimmy’s village is located, one has to climb very rugged steep mountains, brave the thick jungles and cross some of the fastest flowing rivers to get to town and back home.

My land, My Country - Avengu, another paradise forgotten

Avengu village   sits on a  mountain ridge in the highlands of the Morobe Province.   It is one of 10 that sit on a ridge  nestled amongst  the Sarawaged mountains.  

The people are  cut off from their district  headquarters   in Gagidu.  There is no road access.   The  nearest government station is in Pindiu  is a two day walk from Avengu.     The people  grow coffee  and little else in terms of cash crops.

Govt to outlaw 'scam' land leases

SPECIAL agriculture business leases are nothing but a “scam” used by logging companies and will be outlawed immediately, Prime Minister Peter O’Neill says.

He told a radio talkback show yesterday that the logging companies and certain individuals in Government were preying on the innocent and unassuming people in rural areas.

He responded to callers from around the country on the FM100 talkback show complaining about SABLs and the damage they were doing.

Forest Minister Douglas Tomuriesa says he is developing a program with an aim to deliver services using funds from the Log Export Development Levy.

He says he has written a letter to every Member of Parliament outlining his plans on how the levies from logging companies should be spent on development.
