More hopeless excuses from the government on SABL

We have been waiting two-and-a-half years for the government to cancel the unlawful SABL leases and stop the illegal logging, but they are still making excuses and doing nothing!

Latest to try and explain away the delays is Logging Minister, Douglas Tomuriesa [see story below]. He says 30 months is not a long time to take to implement the findings of the Commission of Inquiry and the government has not been dragging its heels!

Damning Oro forest report released

A government report on logging operations in the Yema Local Forest Area (LFA) in Ioma sub-district, Northern Province, has highlighted shortcomings in the implementation of forestry, environment, water resources and logging practices.

Although preliminary, the report said there were indisputable and undeniable evidence of inconsistency and negligence in the management of the Yema forest project.

Logging industry reaping us off, says Tomuriesa

THE forest industry in PNG remains a "loggers" industry without much down stream processing, Forest Minister Douglas Tomuriesa told Parliament on Friday. Mr Tomuriesa, in a ministerial statement entitled "Status of forest industry in PNG", said only about 15 percent of exports is in the form of timber while the rest are exported as unprocessed logs.
